Although we might not always realize it, vacuum plays a role in countless aspects of our everyday lives. In this series, we take a closer look at just how much we rely on vacuum, from the way we breathe to our bicycle helmets to life-saving medical procedures.

In the tech industry, it’s difficult not to hear about Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) and the extraordinary work Elon Musk is doing in regard to driverless vehicles and the Hyperloop. Yet, what exactly is the Hyperloop, you might ask? The MIT Technology Review writes that Musk introduced his concept of a giant vacuum-tube, high-speed transportation system a couple years ago, where he estimated that this particular technology would allow passengers to travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 35 minutes. This concept would operate through a combination of an evacuated tube and magnetic propulsion technologies.

“Hyperloop Technologies is currently working to make this plan a reality.”

The Scientific American wrote that Musk’s Hyperloop will leverage magnet technology used on bullet trains today in addition to vacuum technology to create the fastest mode of transportation available. While revolutionary, the technology to create the Hyperloop does not yet exist as Musk wrote an outline and left it for other visionaries to create. Currently, a startup company named Hyperloop Technologies is currently working to make this futuristic plan a reality.
