The prestigious Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI) had some issues to resolve. Their existing central vacuum system could not get down to the chemistry quality vacuum level they required to run their more demanding applications. How could they add another laboratory-wide vacuum system while still staying within the tight budget framework that they had to work with? The options seemed to be scarce. Individual pumps would be a costly choice considering the large number of users that they needed to supply vacuum to. Water aspirators were not an option as each aspirator uses up to 50,000 gallons per year. Considering the water shortages in Florida and many other states the environmental impact was unacceptable. Other options had their own shortcomings, including loud noise levels and waste vapors from the pumps getting into the laboratory air making it potentially unsafe.
At a local trade show, the facilities manager for MPFI came across VACUU-LAN® local vacuum networks which were a solution that had been in use at several Max Planck Institutes across Germany. Facilities in Jena, Dortmund, Dresden, Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Tubingen and many others had already been using the systems for many years with great success. The multi-user network approach was then and still is the industry standard for laboratory vacuum supply in Europe and Max Planck was interested in employing it for their needs here in the United States.
The VACUU-LAN® systems could provide them with the higher quality chemistry level vacuum the scientists and researchers were in need of while also satisfying their budgetary needs. They were confident that the systems would provide the highest performance vacuum networks available, with exceptionally low operating costs and adaptability as their needs changed over time. With all the technical and sustainability advantages of this proven cutting edge technology, the decision to install the network system in their new building was an easy one.
The state of the art 100,000 square foot Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience building is now LEED- Gold Certified.
